Pizza is a tasty food all around the world, but did you know that it can be quite different depending on where you go? That’s because the ingredients, cooking methods, and pizza-making traditions vary greatly from place to place. For example, in Italy, pizza is typically made with simple and high-quality ingredients such as fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, and cooked in a wood-fired oven, which gives it its characteristic soft and chewy crust.

Meanwhile, in America, pizza is often loaded with toppings and cooked in a gas oven, resulting in a much crispier crust. Even within the same country, you can find different regional variations. For example, in New York, you will find the classic thin-crust pizza, while in Chicago, you will find a deep-dish pizza with a thick crust.

The unique characteristics of pizza in different places make it a fascinating food to explore and try. It’s like a cultural exploration, one slice at a time!

Pizza in Italy

A Naples invention, Pizza originated in Italy in the 1700’s, and they know how to craft the perfect pizza. Naples is the most famous location for pizza in the entire world, and you can still visit the world’s oldest pizzeria, the stunning Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba.

Homemade pizza dough

Pizza Dough Method

You purchase a premade pizza base at your local store, or if you have time, make your own homemade dough following the simple steps below.

  1. Whisk yeast and lukewarm water in a jug. Leave sitting for roughly five minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the centre of the flour. Pour in the liquid yeast mixture and the oil.
  3. Using dough mixer or hands, gently mix dough until smooth. Place pizza dough on a lightly floured work surface and then knead by hand for five minutes.
  4. Lightly oil a bowl, and place mixture in and cover with plastic wrap. Leave in a warm place to rise until the dough doubles in size.
  5. Pour dough mix out onto a clean, floured surface. Now hand knead gently for another five minutes.
  6. Divide dough mixture into equal sized balls. Hand stretch or roll out the bases to the expected size.
  7. Spread some flour on kitchen bench before rolling, in order to prevent sticking.

TIP: We have other dough recipes if you would like to try your hand at sourdough, poolish or more.

Simple Tomato Pizza Sauce

Tomato Pizza Sauce Method

You can either make your own tasty pizza sauce following the simple steps below, or you can purchase a pizza sauce at your local supermarket.

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Using either a whisk, or blender, mix well.
  3. Let sit for five minutes.
  4. Your sauce is now ready to use or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  5. You can also freeze leftover sauce.

Adjust the amount of garlic to suit your taste.

Preparing Caprina Pizza

Preheat your kitchen oven to approximately 500 degrees.

Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone (if you have one) or on a metal tray for the kitchen oven.

Alternatively, if you have a pizza oven, roll out to be smaller than your pizza peel.

First, spread the sauce around. This pizza calls for Tomato Sauce. Spread the Tomato Sauce evenly using the back of a large spoon or the blunt side of a knife.

You should start by adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.

The toppings to include on this pizza are;

  • Goat’s Cheese
  • Chili Peppers
  • Olives
  • Baby Spinach
  • Olive Oil
  • Arugula

This pizza is excellent on its own, or why not enjoy it with a fresh salad?

Cooking

Put the Caprina pizza on the middle shelf in oven, and wait ten minutes.

After approximately 10 minutes, open oven door and check on pizza.

The pizza should be done within roughly 15 minutes. Always cook to personal tastes.

Pizza Tools

When making Caprina Pizza, I always recommend that you use whatever kitchen items you have. My basic pizza tools are…

Rolling Pin

Yes, I know, many people swear by hand stretching, however there’s times in all our lives where we need a good wooden roller.

Pizza Stone

A pizza stone really helps create a fantastic tasting pizza at home. Learn how to clean and care for your Pizza Stone.

Dough Containers

Having quality, air tight dough storage containers is a must.

Goat’s Cheese

Goat’s Cheese is often called by its French name, Chèvre, which means goat. The distinctive character of Goat’s Cheese comes from capric acid, a flavourful fatty acid that promotes good intestinal bacteria in humans.

Because of its low lactose content, Goat’s Cheese is a fantastic choice of cheese for people with lactose intolerance.

Pizza making FAQ

Below we’ve compiled the most common pizza making questions and provided expert answers. Are you looking for how to make awesome pizza at home? Please read on!

How do I prevent dough from sticking to my kitchen bench?

I also recommend a good amount of flour or polenta to be dusted on surfaces. Polenta, having a larger, rounder grain, is perfect to put on your pizza peel or paddle, to slide the pizza on and off easily.

How long to cook a pizza?

It can take anywhere form a few minutes to 20 minutes to cook a pizza, depending on the temperature and heating device used.

Can I put foil on a pizza stone before making pizza?

No. The pizza stone needs to be in contact with the pizza base for it to do its job effectively. It helps absorb moisture from the dough and heat it evenly. Putting foil between the dough and stone will prevent that from happening properly.
