Pizza in China

There’s an old tale that Pizza originated in China. When Marco Polo came to China, he encountered scallion pie, a flat bread that uses dough instead of a batter. When Marco Polo returned to Italy he met a chef from Naples at a dinner party and persuaded him to recreate the dish, putting the fillings on top of the dough instead of the inside.

Homemade pizza dough

Pizza Dough Method

If you don’t have much time, grab a premade pizza base at your local grocery store, or craft your own homemade pizza dough following the simple steps below.

  1. Whisk yeast and lukewarm water in glass or plastic container. Let stand for approximately 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the centre of the flour. Pour in the liquid yeast mixture and the oil.
  3. Using your hands or a mixer, mix the dough until smooth. Pour dough on a lightly floured work surface and then knead by hand for five minutes.
  4. Place dough into lightly oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm place for roughly 30 minutes to an hour, to rise until it doubles in size.
  5. Fold the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently by hand for around five minutes or until smooth.
  6. Spread some flour on kitchen bench before rolling, in order to prevent sticking.
  7. Divide the dough roughly into equal amounts. Roll out pizza bases for the desired size.

TIP: We have other dough recipes if you would like to try your hand at sourdough, poolish or more.

Simple Tomato Pizza Sauce

Soy Sauce

There’s no big secret method here, just use soy sauce as it is.

  1. There are two methods here.
  2. First is dip toppings in soy sauce before adding to pizza.
  3. Secondly, spread soy sauce direct on base.
  4. If you would rather thickened, add small dash of cornstarch or flour and water.

You can also use Kecap Manis for a sweeter, thicker sauce.

Preparing Chinese Beef Pizza

Preheat your kitchen oven to approximately 500 degrees.

Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone (if you have one) or on a metal tray for the kitchen oven.

Alternatively, if you have a pizza oven, roll out to be smaller than your pizza peel.

First, spread the sauce around. This pizza calls for Soy Sauce. Spread the Soy Sauce evenly using the back of a large spoon or the blunt side of a knife.

You should start by adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.

The toppings to include on this pizza are;

  • Beef
  • Spring Onion
  • Sriracha Sauce
  • Garlic
  • Roasted Sesame Seeds

I find this pizza good by itself, yet why not try it with other pizza types?

Oven time

Put the Chinese Beef pizza on the middle shelf of the oven and set a timer for 10 minutes.

After approximately 10 minutes, open oven door and check on pizza.

The pizza should be done within roughly 15 minutes. Always cook to personal tastes.

About Sesame Seeds

First used for cuisine more than 3,000 years ago, Sesame Seeds is one of the oldest OilSeed crops known in the world. Many ancient stories speak of them. In one, the gods created the world and drank wine made from Sesame Seeds. In another, Sesame Seeds represent a symbol of immortality.
An annual flowering herb, the Sesame plant looks very similar to okra. To harvest the Seeds, the pods are dried and collected before they can open. Then, the Seeds are made into Paste or Sesame Oil.

When making Chinese Beef Pizza, I always recommend that you use whatever kitchen items you have. My basic pizza tools are…

Pastry Brush

A pastry brush is vital if you need to ever coat your dough in water, oil, eggs or more. They are cheap to have and very handy to use.

Kitchen Scales

Sriracha

Sriracha is a spicy sauce that has become an increasingly popular condiment around the world. Many pizza restaurants have caught on to this trend and are now offering the delicious and fiery flavor of sriracha as topping options.

Whether you prefer it drizzled over cheese or spread across slices, sriracha packs a punch of flavor with every bite. The sweet heat of this sauce is sure to bring a unique taste that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Pizza making FAQ

Want to make delicious pizzas at home? Here are some expert answers to some of the most common pizza making questions.

How to keep pizza from sticking to stone?

The best way to avoid pizza sticking to a pizza stone is to ensure the base has plenty of flour or polenta between the pizza and the stone.

How to preheat oven for pizza?

To preheat an oven before pizza, put it on the highest temperature for at least 30 minutes prior to adding your pizzas.

When making a fruit pizza what can I put on the fruit so it will not turn brown?

You can add lemon juice as an acid on top of fruits to prevent them browning, however I often find the question should be more about when to put the fruit on. A lot of times, you can cook the pizza with all the other toppings, and then add the fruit as soon as you remove it from the oven. This way, the fruit heats quickly from the pizza, but doesn’t get a chance to burn in the oven.
