Homemade pizza dough

Pizza Dough Method

You can either make your own pizza dough following the simple steps below, or you can purchase a premade base at your local store.

  1. Whisk yeast and lukewarm water in a jug. Leave sitting for roughly five minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the centre of the flour. Pour in the liquid yeast mixture and the oil.
  3. Using dough mixer or hands, gently mix dough until smooth. Place pizza dough on a lightly floured work surface and then knead by hand for five minutes.
  4. Lightly oil a bowl, and place mixture in and cover with plastic wrap. Leave in a warm place to rise until the dough doubles in size.
  5. Pour dough mix out onto a clean, floured surface. Now hand knead gently for another five minutes.
  6. Divide dough mixture into equal sized balls. Hand stretch or roll out the bases to the expected size.
  7. Spread some flour on kitchen bench before rolling, in order to prevent sticking.

Preparing Harissa Pizza

Preheat your kitchen oven to approximately 500 degrees.

Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone (if you have one) or on a metal tray for the kitchen oven.

Alternatively, if you have a pizza oven, roll out to be smaller than your pizza peel.

First, spread the sauce around. This pizza calls for Harissa Paste. Spread the Harissa Paste evenly using the back of a large spoon or the blunt side of a knife.

You should start by adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.

The toppings to include on this pizza are;

  • Mozzarella
  • Onion
  • Cured Olives
  • Lemon Juice

I find this pizza flavorsome on its own, or why not enjoy it with a fresh salad?

Baking time

Put the Harissa pizza in the middle of your oven (on a stone if you have one) and set timer for 10 minutes.

After roughly 10 minutes, check on the pizza.

Pizza should be ready within 15 minutes. However, allow it to cook to personal taste.

About Harissa Paste

Harrisa paste is a spicy condiment commonly used in North African cuisine. It is made from a blend of hot chili peppers, garlic, olive oil, and spices such as cumin and coriander. The paste has a distinctive red color and is often used to add heat and flavor to dishes such as couscous and stews.
Some people also use it as a marinade for meats, or as a spread for sandwiches and dips. Harrisa paste is readily available in supermarkets and specialty food stores.

Pizza Steel

Very similar to a pizza stone, a pizza steel is made of, you guessed it, steel. It’s a great modern method to heat pizza well in a normal oven.

Olive

Related to mangoes, almonds, cherries and peaches, Olives are very healthy, with high levels of vitamin E and powerful antioxidants. Olives are small stone fruits that grow on trees that can live for thousands of years.

Olives come in an assortment of colour, however this is a reflection of the maturity of the fruit; green and black olives come from the same trees, and aren’t different species. In ancient roman times, women used olive oil in their hair and skin during bathing.
