Homemade pizza dough

Pizza Dough Method

If you don’t have much time, grab a premade pizza base at your local grocery store, or craft your own homemade pizza dough following the simple steps below.

  1. Whisk the lukewarm water and yeast in a plastic or glass jug. Let the mixture stand for approx. five minutes.
  2. Add the salt and flour in a large bowl. Create a hollow centre in the flour. Slowly pour the liquid yeast mixture and oil.
  3. Using your hands or a mixer, mix the dough until smooth. Pour dough on a lightly floured work surface and then knead by hand for five minutes.
  4. Place dough into lightly oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm place for roughly 30 minutes to an hour, to rise until it doubles in size.
  5. Fold the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently by hand for around five minutes or until smooth.
  6. Divide the dough roughly into equal amounts. Roll out pizza bases for the desired size.
  7. Spread some flour on kitchen bench before rolling, in order to prevent sticking.

Martinelli recipe

Preparing Martinelli Pizza

Preheat your oven to roughly 500 degrees.

Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone or tray.

Alternatively, if you have a pizza peel, roll out to be smaller than that.

You start by spreading the sauce around. This pizza calls for Tomato Sauce. Spread the Tomato Sauce evenly using the back of a large spoon or ladle.

Then start adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.

Toppings to put on this pizza are;

  • Prosciutto
  • Burrata

Whilst this pizza is fantastic as is, or you could make some homemade garlic bread as well?

Cooking time

Put the Martinelli pizza in oven, and set alarm for ten minutes.

After 10 minutes, open the door and see how cooked pizza is.

Pizza should be ready within 15 minutes. However, allow it to cook to personal taste.

Meat pizza

About Prosciutto

A popular pizza topping is prosciutto, an Italian cured ham that can add flavor to any pizza. Prosciutto has a mildly salty taste that pairs well with other ingredients like mushrooms or caramelized onions.
Prosciutto also brings some nutritional benefits compared to other meats used on pizza. While it contains fat like all cured meats, most of that fat is oleic acid — which may help lower cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation in the body.

Pizza Tools

When making Martinelli Pizza, I always recommend that you use what you have available, without spending lots of money. My basic pizza tool list is…

Rubber Spatula

A quality rubber spatula really helps when it comes to scraping bowls and plates, etc.

Dough Mixer

Having a good dough mixer can make all the difference. You don’t want to be manually kneading forever, do you?

Oil Jug

Having a nice oil jug to pour olive oil gives you a decadent edge. They don’t cost that much either!

Burrata

Burrata is a relatively young cheese, only 100 years old, and hailing from Puglia region in Italy. This delicious, creamy cheese could be mistaken for fresh mozzarella from the outside.

Both are plump white orbs of Italian cheese, one more solid and elastic than the other. Burrata cheese has a soft and loose texture: small, soft cheese curds and cream are packaged inside an outer shell made of Mozzarella cheese.

Pizza making FAQ

Planning to make fantastic pizzas at home? Here are some expert answers to some of the most common pizza making questions.

When making a fruit pizza what can I put on the fruit so it will not turn brown?

You can add lemon juice as an acid on top of fruits to prevent them browning, however I often find the question should be more about when to put the fruit on. A lot of times, you can cook the pizza with all the other toppings, and then add the fruit as soon as you remove it from the oven. This way, the fruit heats quickly from the pizza, but doesn’t get a chance to burn in the oven.

How long is pizza good for in the fridge?

A cooked pizza will store in the fridge for up to 5 days, depending on the toppings and the container it is being held in.

Why isn’t my pizza crust cooking all the way through?

Either you didn’t cook your pizza long enough, or the oven wasn’t hot enough. You should always let your oven preheat for at least 30 minutes before you bake the pizza. Then watch your pizza crust turn golden around the edges and evenly browned on the bottom before removing.
