Pizza Dough Method
You can either make your own pizza dough following the simple steps below, or you can purchase a premade base at your local store.
- Whisk the lukewarm water and yeast in a plastic or glass jug. Let the mixture stand for approx. five minutes.
- Add the salt and flour in a large bowl. Create a hollow centre in the flour. Slowly pour the liquid yeast mixture and oil.
- Using your hands or a mixer, mix the dough until smooth. Pour dough on a lightly floured work surface and then knead by hand for five minutes.
- Place dough into lightly oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm place for roughly 30 minutes to an hour, to rise until it doubles in size.
- Fold the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently by hand for around five minutes or until smooth.
- Divide the dough roughly into equal amounts. Roll out pizza bases for the desired size.
- Spread some flour on kitchen bench before rolling, in order to prevent sticking.
TIP: We have other dough recipes if you would like to try your hand at sourdough, poolish or more.
Barbecue Pizza Sauce Method
You can either make your own tasty pizza sauce following the simple steps below, or you can purchase a pizza sauce at your local supermarket.
- Combine all ingredients together in a small saucepan, on medium-low heat.
- Whisk all ingredients until well combined and bring mixture to a simmer.
- Partially cover the saucepan. Allow sauce to simmer for 10-15 minutes
- Stir mixture occasionally, until it has thickened nicely.
- Let sauce cool to room temperature then place in the fridge to cool completely.
You can make the sauce the day before and refrigerate to save time.
Preparing Mexicana Pizza
Preheat your kitchen oven to approximately 500 degrees.
Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone (if you have one) or on a metal tray for the kitchen oven.
Alternatively, if you have a pizza oven, roll out to be smaller than your pizza peel.
First, spread the sauce around. This pizza calls for BBQ Sauce. Spread the BBQ Sauce evenly using the back of a large spoon or the blunt side of a knife.
You should start by adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.
The toppings to include on this pizza are;
- Minced Beef
- Spicy Sauce
I find this pizza very good as is, or you could enjoy it with a simple side dish?
Put the Mexicana pizza on the middle shelf of the oven and set a timer for 10 minutes.

A fruit of the Capsicum pod type, Jalapeño Peppers are medium sized hot Peppers when compared to other chili Peppers. Jalapeno are popular for their mild heat level, which is roughly 5,000 Scoville Heat Units, which is in the middle of the heat charts.
Originating in Mexico, Jalapeño Peppers are now grown worldwide, and are a popular addition to many cuisines. The word Jalapeno is Spanish for “Jalapa”, the capital of Veracruz, Mexico where it first grew.
When making Mexicana Pizza, I suggest you just use what you have available, without spending any money. My recommended basic pizza tool list is…
Having a good dough mixer can make all the difference. You don’t want to be manually kneading forever, do you?
Having a nice oil jug to pour olive oil gives you a decadent edge. They don’t cost that much either!
I use quality wooden boards constantly when making pizzas, botth to carry dough balls and to use when slicing baked pizzas.
Beef is a popular pizza topping that can take your pizza to the next level. It can be used in combination with other ingredients to create flavor combinations unlike any other!
Not only that, but beef is also a great source of several important nutrients such as protein, iron and zinc. You should always use high-quality ground beef or chopped steak for optimal flavor.

Pizza making FAQ
Want to make delicious pizzas at home? Here are some expert answers to some of the most common pizza making questions.
Can I use brown sugar when making pizza dough?
Yes, however I personally prefer white sugar. I feel it helps feed the yeast better, however all of pizza dough making is constant experimentation, so try it out with brown sugar and you may be surprised with the results!
How to defrost pizza dough?
You should defrost frozen pizza dough by leaving it in a warm place for at least a few hours. You can also then use the defrost mode on your microwave to speed up the process a little.
Can I make pizza without making pizza dough?
Absolutely! Just buy a premade base at your shopping centre, or even ask your local pizza store if they will sell you some bases or dough. It’s amazing how many people will willingly do this, to encourage you to start your homemade pizza hobby.
