Homemade pizza dough

Pizza Dough Method

If you don’t have much time, grab a premade pizza base at your local grocery store, or hand make your own pizza dough following the simple steps below. Some shops even carry premade pizza dough in balls.

  1. Whisk yeast and lukewarm water in a jug. Stand for around five minutes.
  2. Add the salt and flour in a large bowl. Create a hollow centre in the flour. Slowly pour the liquid yeast mixture and oil.
  3. Using your hands or spatula, gently combine the flour mixture until smooth. Then turn out dough onto lightly floured surface and hand knead for roughly five minutes.
  4. Place the dough mixture in to an oiled bowl, and cover with plastic wrap. Leave in a warm place until the dough has at least risen to double in size.
  5. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Hand knead gently for five minutes until reasonably smooth.
  6. Sprinkle some flour on work surface before rolling out dough to prevent any sticking.
  7. Divide dough mix into equal amounts, now roll out the bases to the desired size.

TIP: We have other dough recipes if you would like to try your hand at sourdough, poolish or more.

Simple Tomato Pizza Sauce

Tomato Pizza Sauce Method

You can make this delicious pizza sauce following the simple steps below, or you can purchase a pizza sauce at your local store.

  1. Blend all sauce ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Ensure all ingredients are mixed together well.
  3. Keep mixture sitting for five minutes.
  4. Your sauce is now ready to add to your pizza bases.
  5. Sauce will last up to 3 days in fridge.

If your sauce is too thick, add a splash of olive oil or water to get the right consistency.

Preparing Tomato Pie Pizza

Preheat your kitchen oven to approximately 500 degrees.

Roll out the dough to either slightly smaller than your pizza stone (if you have one) or on a metal tray for the kitchen oven.

Alternatively, if you have a pizza oven, roll out to be smaller than your pizza peel.

First, spread the sauce around. This pizza calls for Tomato Sauce. Spread the Tomato Sauce evenly using the back of a large spoon or the blunt side of a knife.

You should start by adding the largest ingredients, then work your way down. The last is any cheese topping, such as Mozzarella, which you should evenly cover the other toppings with, and then finally any herbs.

The toppings to include on this pizza are;

  • Mozzarella
  • Tomato
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt

I find this pizza mouthwatering on its own, or why not with another style of pizza?

Baking time

Put the Tomato Pie pizza in the middle of your oven (on a stone if you have one) and set timer for 10 minutes.

In 10 minutes, open oven door and check.

The pizza should take roughly 15 minutes to cook, adjust time to cook to personal taste.

About Olive Oil

Olive Oil has been used in cooking for at least 5,000 years. Since Olives are technically a fruit, that makes Olive Oil a fruit Juice. The Olives are crushed like other fruits; oranges, lemons etc to get the Oil.
One olive tree can last up to 2,000 years, and can produce 30 kilos of Olives, which makes roughly 4 litres of Oil every year. Medical studies have shown that consuming olive Oil daily helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good one (HDL).

Pizza Tools

When making Tomato Pie Pizza, I always recommend that you use what you have available, without spending lots of money. My basic pizza tool list is…

Pizza Steel

A pizza steel is very similar to a pizza stone, and works the same way in a normal kitchen oven.

Dough Mixer

OK, so this isn’t vital, but if you make enough pizza, breads, etc it is worth investing in a good mixer for your dough.

Mesh Sieve

You will find having a seive such a useful element for all your baking, not just for pizza. It’s great to filter all flours through a fine mesh sieve before adding to recipes.

Salt

Salt in small doses can be fine, but as a pizza topping, have it in tiny doses. As with most other nutrients and foods, eating a balanced diet is key.

Salt is essential for your body to function correctly, and it’s essential for good health. However, eating too much or too little salt can be harmful and unhealthy.

Pizza Care

Need advice on storing pizza. Here goes!

Freezer guide

You can store leftover pizza in the freezer for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen as directed above until heated through.

Store in the fridge

Leftover slices of pizza may be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Warm in the center of a 450 degree F oven for approximately 6 minutes, on a pizza stone if possible, until heated through. See our article on reheating pizza for more.

Pizza making FAQ

Want to know how to make fantastic pizza at home? Here are some FAQ and their answers to the most common pizza making questions.

How long can pizza sit out?

You shouldn’t leave pizza out in the open uncovered, for more than a few hours. In fact, I would put it in an air tight container within an hour, if it weren’t being eaten.

How long should I leave stretched out dough out before making pizza?

As short a time as possible. The longer you leave it, the more chance that your dough will stick to whatever surface it is on, will become moist and soggy or will start drying out. It’s best to roll out a ball of dough just prior to adding the pizza sauce and toppings.

How long to preheat pizza stone?

Ideally, you should poreheat your oven for at least 30 minutes prior to putting the pizza in.
